Be Prepared!

Are you ready in case of a disaster to leave your home quickly with your pet?

Do emergency personnel know there is a pet in the home?

What happens to your pets if you have an accident or die?

This section has some ideas and resources for you.

Evacuation Checklist

  •  Portable or collapsible crate (see the My Dogs Section)
  • Collar and lead and harness
  • Collapsible bowls
  • 1 month supply of medication (heartworm, flea control, etc.)
  • Food and treats
  • In a plastic ZipLock bag: Copy of Vaccination records, Microchip ID Number, Telephone numbers and addresses for you and  alternate contacts, your Vet's address and number, Your dog's registration certificate, or a detailed description of your dog, a good photograph of your dog, Rabies tag number, and license number.
  • First aid kit 
  • Paper towels, plastic bags, duct tape
  • Dog bed or blanket
  • Toy

LEGISLATION

The awful situaton with Hurricane Katrina brought the plight of pets and their owner's to international attention. People died because they would not leave their pets. Pets died because they had to be left behind.

The legislature is working on a bill ---PAWS, the Pet Animal Safety and Welfare Statute--- that needs YOUR input! This statute will allow resources to evacuate PETS and THEIR OWNERS! Contact your Senator and Congressmen to let them know YOU SUPPORT THIS BILL!

Things to Do

Have a "Buddy System" set up with a friend, relative or neighbor to take care of your pet if you are injured or ill.

Have a will that specifies what you want to be done with your pets!

Be sure to have Alert Notices on your doors to let Emergency Personnel know there are pets in the home in case of Fire.

A little planning now can save a lot of stress and heartbreak.

I have an emergency bag in the trunk my car for each of my dogs since we live in tornado country and are also on a major eathquake fault line. I had to evacuate 3 dogs and a litter of 7 puppies this summer after thunderstorms knocked out the power for 9 days...No matter where you live a natural disaster can occur with little warning.
